EF-S 18-55mm
f/3.5-5.6 IS II

The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II is a standard general purpose zoom lens that Canon offer as a kit with many of their DSLRs. Build of plastics it still seems to be rugged and firm and it's very light and small in size. It offers a focal range that's useable for many purposes such as travel photography. At its shortest focal length of 29 mm (effective) it will not allow dramatic wide angle shots and because of its moderate longest focal length of 88 mm it will neither allow wildlife/sports photography. But the focal range is useable and with a good aperture range and an excellent image stabilizer (4 stops) this lens can be a good low cost companion for casual everyday shots. And the image quality is not all that bad: there is no distortion for focal lengths of 50 mm (effective) and up (but quite a bit at 29 mm) and there is no relevant curvature of the focal plane. Some corner shadow is visible at the wide end even when stopped down but this could be corrected for with post processing. While color fringes in focused and in out-of-focus parts of the image are quite pronounced the resolution/sharpness of the lens is really good - at least at mediocre focal ranges. But even at the wide end (where it's weakest) a little stopping down will get you decent image quality.

If you already own this lens and are asking yourself whether this lens is all that you'll ever need I would certainly answer that with No (but then again I can't get enough lenses). Not so much for the image quality because in that respect the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II is good enough for lots of purposes. But there are many many things that you just can't do with a lens that's not wider than 29 mm, not longer than 88 mm and not faster than f/3.5-5.6 (and that's not a macro lens). But if you are looking for this kind of general purpose lens that's good for many things yet excellent for none the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II - for its image quality, size, weight and price - is certainly among the better of those lenses.
